Lights & Shadow Exploration
A Preschool Learning Journey in Light & Discovery
Step into a world of light and discovery at Riri’s Children Playloft.
In this guided learning journey, children explore how light interacts with different materials through hands-on play. Through observation and experimentation, they begin to understand simple scientific concepts in a gentle and engaging way.
Programme Flow
Children take part in a 45-minute guided session led by our Play Guide, where they explore key ideas such as:
how shadows are formed
how shadows change with movement
the difference between transparent and opaque materials
how light can create colourful shadow effects
Children are also introduced to visual materials that help them understand that some things are not visible to the eye, and how tools can help us “see” beyond surfaces.
Through a series of hands-on exploration moments, children are invited to create, test, and observe how light behaves in different situations.
Learning Objectives
Through this learning journey, children will:
develop curiosity through observation and experimentation
understand basic concepts of light and shadow
explore visible and invisible elements in the world around them
practise problem-solving through trial and adjustment
express creativity through open-ended materials

Recommended For
Nursery 2 (N2), Kindergarten 1 and 2. This programme is especially suitable for preschools exploring themes such as lights and shadows discovery.
Teacher Notes
This programme introduces light and shadow concepts through guided exploration and visual discovery, rather than formal instruction.
Children will be working in a dimmed environment during parts of the session to better observe light effects. This helps them focus on how light behaves, while remaining a safe and comfortable space for young learners.
Concepts such as transparent vs opaque and how shadows change are introduced through hands-on interaction with materials, allowing children to observe differences directly.
Children may experiment at different paces — some may focus on observing light and colours, while others may explore how to change their shadows. Our Play Guides will gently support and prompt children based on their level of readiness.
Teachers are welcome to participate alongside the children, especially during exploration moments, to help guide observation and reinforce learning connections.
